The Cinema and Television Department at the Institute of Art Studies is a central research branch gathering some of the most noted film specialists in Bulgaria. It is open to international cooperation and gives a wide choice of possibilities for education and post-graduate studies of the audiovisual media and screen art.
Founded: 1973
Staff in 1999 - 7 scholars, 2 doctorants and one researcher
Field of studies: film studies and media studies, history and theory of the audiovisual arts - cinema, television, video, history and theory of the mass media, modern technology in the audiovisual arts, documentation and information data base about screen arts in Bulgaria.

Chair: Alexander Yanakiev (b. 1955) Ph.D., Assoc. Prof., Deputy Director of the Institute of Art Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAN), lecturer at NATFA, NBU - Department of Mass Media, member of the Union of Bulgarian Filmmakers, Union of Bulgarian Journalists and the Society of Animation Studies, California, USA, member of the Specialized Scientific Council on Theater Studies and Theater Art, Film Studies and Film Art at the High Certifying Commission, presentations at international forums on problems of audiovisual media and cinema in USA, Russia, Italy, Bulgaria.
Fields of scientific research: film studies, history of the Bulgarian cinema, aesthetics of animation cinema, documentary films, mass media and computer technology, film communication, information and documentation in the audiovisual sphere, film criticism.

Nedeltcho Milev (b. 1933) - Professor, Dr., member of the Union of Bulgarian Filmmakers, Union of Bulgarian Journalists, FIPRESCI, founder of film education at the National Academy of Theater and Film Arts (NATFA), lecturer on film theory, film analysis and film criticism at NATFA, Sofia University - Faculty of Journalism, Veliko Tarnovo University, South-Western University in Blagoevgrad, New Bulgarian University (NBU) - Sofia, lectures and reports presented at international forums on problems of audiovisual media and cinema in the USA, Russia, USSR, France, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Bulgaria, author of 13 books on the problems of screen arts.
Fields of scientific research: film studies, theater studies, theory of the audiovisual media, history and theory of the Bulgarian cinema, film criticism.

Vladimir Michailov (b.1943), Assoc. Prof., Dr., member of the Union of Bulgarian Filmmakers, Union of Bulgarian Journalists, FIPRESCI,   head of Department Mass Media at the NBU-Sofia, lecturer on "Media Communication Policy, History and Theory of Television and Video at NVU, Sofia University, NATFA, manager of the scientific project "Cinema, Television and Video - Aesthetic Media of the Cultural Processes at the End of the Century, post-graduate studies in Germany, lectures at international forums in Vienna, Sofia, author of 7 books on the problems of television, mass media and media reception.
Fields of scientific research: media studies (history, theory and criticism of the mass media) with an accent on the audiovisual mass media.

Dimitar Kabaivanov (b. 1953), Ph.D., Assoc. Prof., member of the Union of Bulgarian Filmmakers, Union of Journalists Podkrepa, wrote the screenplays of documentary films, author of encyclopedic articles on Bulgarian filmmakers, lectures at international festivals and scientific forums in Russia, Bulgaria, manager of the scientific project The Cinema in Bulgaria from the End of World War II till the Mid 70s.
Fields of scientific research: history of the Bulgarian documentary cinema, theory of video and mass media.

Maya Dimitrova (b. 1956) Ph.D., Assoc. Prof., lecturer at NATFA, NBU - Department of Mass Media, member of the Union of Bulgarian Filmmakers, Union of Bulgarian Journalists, FIPRESCI and SES-Geneva, lectures at international forums on problems of audiovisual media and film art in Berlin, Beijing, Vienna, Sofia.
Fields of scientific research: history of film art, theory of author's cinema, European film models, aesthetics of mass media, film criticism.

Ingeborg Bratoeva-Daraktchieva (b. 1957) Ph.D., Research Fellow, member of the Union of Bulgarian Filmmakers, Union of Bulgarian Journalists - chairman of the association of film journalists, FIPRESCI, post-graduate studies at the European University on communications, lectures at international forums on problems of the audiovisual media and film art in Vienna, Prague, Sofia.
Fields of scientific research: history of the cinema, Bulgarian cinema, screen dramaturgy, post-modernism in the cinema, new technologies and the artistic image in audiovisual media.

Nadezhda Michailova (Marinchevska) - (b. 1959) - Research Fellow, Ph.D. lecturer at NATFA, NBU - Department of Mass Media, member of the Union of Bulgarian Filmmakers, Union of Bulgarian Journalists, FIPRESCI, Society of Animation Studies - a scientific association for the study of animation. Post-graduate studies on animation in Belgium, lectures at international forums in Montreal, Sofia.
Fields of scientific research: history and theory of animation cinema, animation dramaturgy, aesthetics of the audiovisual mass media, film criticism.

As a result of individual projects, realized by research fellows in the department, numerous monographs on problems of the theory and history of Bulgarian and world cinema and theory and history of mass media and media perception, were published. Among them are:

Educational Programs
Training of post-graduate Ph.D.
The Cinema and Television Department has been a leading scientific center in Bulgaria for post-graduate doctorate studies in film studies and media studies from its very founding. A great part of the scientists that have got a Ph.D. during the last 15 years in these fields have found their realization in the Cinema and Television Department at the Institute of Art Studies which speaks in itself about the qualities and possibilities of our scientific community to reproduce its scientific potential in an ever growing from the point of view of social interest sphere of the screen arts, media and new technologies in the mass media.
The changing social environment that drastically changes the parameters of the cultural landscape in Bulgaria and, in particular, the media and the audiovisual arts, presupposes also the conditions for the development of scientific knowledge in this field and the necessity of new specialists with high scientific qualification. Film studies and media studies are spheres where there is being realized constantly an international cooperation due to the international character of the problems which are subject of scientific research by specialists of screen arts and mass media. In this respect the Cinema and Television Department is open to international cooperation and the preparation of doctorate studies from foreign countries.
- The doctorate studies which are being prepared at the Department have the possibility to use qualified management by some of the most important scientists in this field in Bulgaria
 - The doctorants have at their disposal the accumulated during many years of scientific research work specialized documentation, a photo lab, archives and library
 - During their studying the young scientists become regular members of the Department and actively participate in the scientific work - meetings, discussions, scientific conferences, lectures, seminars. They participate also in scientific projects.
The doctorants are encouraged to take part in international conferences and scientific forums. They are supported as well in  publishing of their scientific papers.
