Department of Theory and History of Theatre was founded in 1963 as a little group for theatrical and cinema researches at the Institute of Fine arts - section “Theory of fine arts”. First salaried employees - Nevena Indjeva, Lada Paneva, Alexander Alexandrov, Chavdar Dobrev. From 1966 to 1973 it functioned as a particular section: “History and theory of Bulgarian theatre and cinema”; since 1973 it has become a section “History and theory of theatre”. First chairman: Prof. Gocho Gochev (since 1966 to 1981).
The first 35 years: The basement of a History of Bulgarian theatre & theatre theory was been got off. The most eminent Bulgarian drama specialists worked in the department - Gocho Gochev, Ljubomir Tenev, Nevena Indjeva, Lada Paneva, Chavdar Dobrev, Vasil Stefanov,  Kristina Tosheva, Iosif Konforti, Georgi Saev, Stefan Tanev, Margarita Bradistilova, Vladislav Todorov, Yana Mutafchieva, etc. Published more than 30 individual monographs and books, treating the history of Bulgarian theatre and the theory of performance.
Object: The History of Bulgarian theatre and Theory of theatre  art. General purpose: Historical reconstruction and theoretical interpretation of the  development of theatre  in Bulgaria since the Renaissance to now dyes (in a culturogical and comparative light) & contemporary theory of theatre.

Stefan Tanev - (b. 1932) - Assoc.prof, dr. Researches in a field of Bulgarian dramaturgy,  Spanish drama and theatre.

Kristina Tosheva (b.1935) - PhD, Assoc. Prof. Researches in a field of Bulgarian theatre history, theory of performance

Svetlana Baytchinska (b. 1954) - PhD, Assoc. Prof. Researches in a field of a history of Bulgarian theatre, theory of the drama, typology of theatre performance

Elena Vladova (b. 1945) - PhD, Assoc. Prof. Lecturer in the National Academy of theatre and film art (NATFIZ) of “History and theory of puppet theatre”, member of UNIMA. Researches in a field of puppet theatre.

Svetla Beneva (b. 1952) - PhD, Research Fellow. Researches in a field of contemporary Bulgarian theatre.

Romeo Popiliev (b.1954) - PhD, Research Fellow, Lecturer in NBU of “History of theatre”. Researches in a field of Bulgarian dramaturgy,  theory and aesthetics of modern European drama

Violeta Decheva (b. 1964) - PhD, Research Fellow. Lecturer in NATFIZ of “Theatre anthropology”. Researches in a field of theory and aesthetics of modern European theatre,  theory of acting, contemporary Bulgarian theatre.

Ioanna Spasova (b. 1964) - PhD, Research Fellow. Lecturer in University “St. Kl. Ochridski” (“Theatre semiotics”). Researches in a field of history of Bulgarian acting and theatre semiotics.

Kamelia Nikolova (b. 1959) - PhD, Research Fellow. Lecturer in NATFIZ, NBU, and the Academy of fine Arts of “History and theory of west-European theatre”, member of editorial board of “European journal of Art Education”. Researches in a field of history of West-European and Bulgarian theatre,  history and theory of directing in XX century.

Nilolai Yordanov (b.1961) - PhD, Research Fellow, Executive Director of BAT (Bulgarian Association of the Theatres), lecturer in NATFIZ of “Theatre criticism”. Researches in a field of theory of the drama.
